House in Rockanje by the Sea, Netherlands.

(Un peu en francais en bas de cette page.)

We are a family of three, we may travel with one less.

Our home is a spacious detached three floor house with a garden on three sides and a terrace at the back (to the south-west). There is parking space on the entranceway and also plenty on the street.

On the groundfloor you'll find a hallway with access to a toilet, a large and bright livingroom with separate areas for lounging, computering and dining, and an open kitchen. On the first floor are the master bedroom, a single bedroom with a raised bed (about 1.20m high) and the bathroom with bathtub, shower, large sink and toilet. There is a small extra room which we used as home office. On the topfloor is a large single bedroom, where we can easily put an extra matrass on the floor if needed.

We share the ground floor with our sweet cat Dusty. The only care she needs is food and water; she uses a cat door and has no cat toilet for you to clean. Still a bit of attention now and then would be nice; she likes to be around people and to be talked to.

You can use our bikes, hammocks, kites and other beachstuff and put up a swing.

We live in Rockanje, a small town (6000 inhabitants) separated from the sea only by typical sanddunes with woods (with some famous protected birding areas) and a large sandy beach that goes on for kilometers. The town has a supermarket, bakeries, drugstore, bookstore with postoffice, restaurants and pubs (also on the beach, for sunset meals!), weekly small fresh market, etc.

A few kilometers away are larger towns with all kinds of shops, theaters, swimmingpools, churches, marina's, etc. Brielle and Hellevoetsluis are also very pitoresque and interesting to explore, being old fortress towns. The rest of the region mostly consists of farmland and water, so offers beautiful wide views. It also makes a great area for cycling (like all Dutch do), walking/ hiking, horse riding and every kind of watersport (swimming, canoeing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, diving, waterskiing, motorboating, sailing, in/on both sweet and salty water).

Since the famous Delta Works there are roads off the island in all directions.
To the east Rotterdam is only 35 km away, a bustling city built on both sides of the river Nieuwe Maas. You'll find musea, theaters, restaurants, shops for everyone's taste there.
It also has the largest harbour of Europe, outside the city to the west, made accessible by car, bike, boat and on foot: really interesting for tourists. Where the river ends into the North Sea is the Maasvlakte (in fact two of them), new land made in the sea; it was a wonder to see this happen over the years. There are good beaches there and through the very interesting (free) Futureland infocentre you can visit the working harbour over land and water.

On the road north to Amsterdam (100 km) you'll pass the historical cities of Delft (famous e.g. for it's blue pottery and the painter Vermeer), The Hague (Netherland's seat of governement and the International Court of Justice), Leiden (our oldest university city) and the Keukenhof (famous park of flowering bulbs).

To the south is Belgium, but first you'll get to the province of Zeeland, consisting of large islands connected by the dikes of the Delta Works. There are many good sandy beaches there and it's great to cycle along the green and grab an icecream or a meal of seafood in one of the pitoresque towns.

Even a daytrip to England can easily be made: by taking the night boat from Hoek van Holland to and from.

Neighborhood

About the neighborhood

Some pictures of the Island of Voorne-Putten. From top to bottom:
The Mildenburg-forest.
The long and wide sandy beach of Rockanje, along a quiet corner of the North Sea. Swimming is safe here even for small children. The water is clean ("blue flag"-award).
The Brielse Meer, one of the large sweet water lakes, suiteable for all kinds of watersports, including swimming, sailing, canoeing, motorboating, diving, surfing, kite surfing, waterskiing, fishing.
The Bernisser Grienden, ideal to watch wild life in a quiet way from a canoe.
The historical town of Den Briel (Brielle).
Fortress-city Hellevoetsluis with central marina, opening to the Haringvliet. This water is sealed off from the sea by a part of the famous Delta-works. Large rivers drain on it, and through them the rest of the Netherlands can be reached by boat.
Apart from all kinds of watersports many other sports can be enjoyed on Voorne-Putten, e.g. walking, cycling, horse riding, golf, midgetgolf, tennis.
Drivind to the north off our island you'll get to Rotterdam in less then 30 minutes, a bustling city built on both sides of the river Maas. You'll find musea, theaters, restaurants, shops for everyone's tast there. It is also the largest harbour of Europe. Where the river Maas ends into the sea is the Maasvlakte 2, new land being made in the sea; it's a wonder to see this happen.
Further north the road will get you to Amsterdam (100 km), passing the historical cities of Delft (famous e.g. for it's blue pottery), The Hague (Netherland's seat of governement), Leiden (old university city) and the Keukenhof (famous park of flowering bulbs).
To the south of our place is Zeeland, consisting of large islands connected by the dikes of the famous Delta Works. There are many good sandy beaches there and it's great to cycle along the green and grab an icecream or a meal of seafood in one of the small towns.

Our family consists of Cisca (1962 - elderly care specialist, likes to travel, read, hike, go to musea), and kids Troy (2000 - student Industrial Ecology, likes socializing, traveling, cycling, and playing guitar and piano) and Smilla (2001 - just finished International Creative Business, likes traveling, being creative, and gaming/reading). Troy is not living with us anymore and doesn't come on most exchanges, although he makes some exceptions. We have a sweet and funny cat, Dusty, who is often outside but loves to be around people.

We have been with Intervac since the kids were small and enjoyed every one of the more than 70 exchanges we did.
We like other people to enjoy our house when we are away, and also it's good for Dusty to have company.
