Newly refurbished large seaside home in South Devon, with five bedrooms and four bathrooms and lovely sea view
Our house is nearly 101 years old and retains some period features like the hall and staircase and our high ceilings. However, we had it remodelled and refurbished in 2019/2020 and so it has many more modern touches, including triple glazing, a fabulous huge new kitchen and new bathrooms. We love the sea view from our house and garden and are sure you will enjoy it too. We can easily walk to the beach or to the shops or to the mainline train station in 5-10 minutes. We also have a bus stop just outside our garden wall.
Downstairs we have a formal sitting room with sofas and grand piano, plus a sea view. We watch TV in our snug, with its corner sofa and woodburning stove for colder evenings. We have a large utility room with washing machine and tumble drier. But the room we use the most is our kitchen with its lovely bright windows (including big patio doors leading on to a terrace outside), a window seat, small sitting area and big dining table. It has a big island unit and loads of workspace, as well as a sea view. The fridge freezer has an icemaker, we have a Quooker boiling water tap, both induction and gas hobs, convection and steam ovens plus a microwave and dishwasher.
Upstairs there are five bedrooms. Three of the five have their own private facilities. Bedroom 1 is big and very light, with three lots of windows and a sea view. It has a double bed and an en-suite bathroom with bath, separate shower, basin and WC. Bedroom 2 has a double bed, a sea view, and en-suite shower room with basin and WC. Bedroom 3 has a double bed and en-suite shower room with basin and WC.
Bedroom 4 has a double bed. Bedroom 5 has a single bed, although it also has a desk and we mainly use it as a study. We have a cot which can be set up in any of the rooms. There is also a family bathroom, with bath, bidet, basin and WC.
We normally park in the yard on the North side of the house, accessible via our electric gates. There is plenty of extra space for parking on our gravel driveway. We have a big garden, with a terrace and table and chairs facing south, outside the kitchen. We also have a small patio with table and chairs on the west side of the house which we call the gin and tonic patio as it catches the early evening sun. For children there is lots of room to run about and it is good for playing hide-and-seek but we would note that little ones would need to be supervised as the main gateway to the road is open.

We have now agreed our exchanges for 2024 but we welcome offers for 2025. For August 2025 we would love two weeks somewhere in France or Spain with a private swimming pool. For other times of year we invite exchanges of duration of long weekends to two weeks. |

Neighborhood
About the neighborhood
Teignmouth (pronounced 'Tinmuth') is a small seaside town of about 15,000 people and has a good range of local shops, including a couple of supermarkets. The beach is an easy walk away from our house (5-10 minutes) and there is also an open-air heated pool on the seafront, which we hope will be reopening in summer 2024. There is also a small hotel near our house which has a heated indoor pool available to non-residents. Teignmouth has a large and cute children's playground and a crazy golf course on the sea front. A little passenger ferry takes you across the river to the picturesque village of Shaldon with its stylish little cafes, pubs, a little zoo and the Ness Beach, accessed on foot via the Smugglers' Tunnel. There are opportunities for watersports and hiring of boats, kayaks, boards and wetsuits is possible.
Teignmouth is close to other seaside places like Dawlish and Torquay, about 30 minutes from Exeter, with its ancient cathedral and medieval underground passages and 45 minutes from Plymouth. On longish day trips it is easy to visit places like the Roman ruins at Bath and the world's first suspension bridge and first iron ship at Bristol or to Tintagel or the Eden Project in Cornwall.
Devon is a green and hilly county with a pretty coastline and good hill walking on Dartmoor. It attracts a lot of UK visitors for holidays. There are many historic places to explore including castles like Berry Pomeroy or Castle Drogo and historic houses like Killerton or Saltram, or Greenway, crime writer Agatha Christie's house near picturesque Dartmouth plus loads of other tourist attractions too, many of them providing fun for children, such as the South Devon Steam Railway, Woodlands Adventure Park or Pennywell Farm (especially geared for small children).
There are lots of places to eat out. A personal favourite of ours is Riverford Field Kitchen, in quiet countryside near pretty Totnes. The Field Kitchen is indoors but based in the heart of a large organic farm and has delicious food from the farm. It is popular but you can book ahead on the internet.

Delightful swap arranged without fuss. Very thoughtful hosts Pam and Graham even left us a cream tea to enjoy! Charming rural setting and cute cottage, with cosy woodburner, great for our early winter break Lots to explore in the area. Pam and Graham left our own house immaculately clean for our return. We would warmly recommend.
Wonderful house in great location. Hosts were very helpful and kind.
This was a most successful exchange, with generous hosts who were delightful to deal with. Their home was large and very comfortable and we adored the view of Lake Washington. Our home was immaculate on our return. We would very warmly recommend.
Very pleasant exchange to a nice warm home handy for Bath. We found the car parking space quite tight but luckily it was possible to park on the road instead.

Our resident family consists just of Anne and Tony, in our late sixties.
Our daughter, Kirstin, lives in Hertfordshire (north of London) and our son, Stewart, lives in Edinburgh. They are in their late thirties. Kirstin is married to Andrew, now with two little daughters, Cordelia (7 in February) and Sienna (5 in June), and Stewart is married to Lin. We enjoy the company of our family and they seem not to mind ours! We have enjoyed a number of exchanges with family along with us.
For August 2025 we are actively looking for a place where all eight of us could come, so four double (or twin) bedrooms. If you have a swimming pool that would be wonderful.
We have no pets and prefer not to be trusted to look after any pets on exchange.
