Preparing your home exchange
Whether you're preparing to welcome your exchange partner or preparing to leave your exchange partner's home, we've put together some tips and tricks to make sure the handover is smooth and enjoyable.
Gather information that will come in handy for you exchange partners
Consider your home from your guest's point of view. Are there simple improvements that could make it more comfortable? Is everything in working order?
Tourist information
Visit your local Tourist Office and prepare an information pack with brochures from local museums, theatres and fun parks. If your town doesn't have a tourist office, sometimes you can find these brochures in the lobby of a local hotel.
Local jems
Take some time to think about your community from a visitor's point of view. Where is the local charm? Collect a list of local restaurants, with information about the food and service. Add to that a list of grocery stores, and shopping centers. One of the joys of home exchange is frequenting places that the locals do.
Household insurance
Contact your insurance companies for household insurance and for your car (if you are swapping cars) to make sure everything is adequately covered.
Local cinema
Browse the internet and bookmark the homepage of your local cinema so your guests can find out what is playing during their visit.

It is important to make your home as warm and inviting for your exchange guests as you would for any of your friends. Make sure that your house is clean and ready for their arrival. Remember that you expect the same from your exchange partners. A bottle of wine and some flowers on the table provide a special feeling, both for when you welcome your guests or leaving your exchange home.

- Se till att sängkläder är fräscha, och att det finns rena handdukar i badrummen.
- Se till att baslivsmedel som socker, te, kaffe och salt inte har tagit slut. Gör det enkelt för dina gäster att få en bekväm start.
- Lämna kylskåpet rent och hyllor tomma, Förutom baslivsmedel. Ett exempel kan vara: mjölk, ketchup, eller pickles. Det är underförstått att mat kvar i kylskåpet är för era gäster använda, och kan eller inte kan fortfarande vara där när du kommer tillbaka. För att vara tydlig men ska du inte lämna rester eller delvis använda saker (öppnade flaskor mjölk) såvida inte artikeln är inte avsedd att användas fullt ut inom några dagar (ketchup, senap, kryddor).
- Se till att Ni har betalt alla räkningar som förfaller under Ert byte.
- Lämna instruktioner om hur apparater fungerar och var man kan hitta centralvärme / varmvatten, säkringsdosan och andra faciliteter. Be gärna en granne eller vän att stanna till och presentera sig, för att se till att era gäster kan hitta allt de behöver.
- Lämna alla nödvändiga instruktioner om vård av växter och djur. Glöm inte att inkludera din veterinärs namn och telefonnummer, om det ingår skötsel av husdjur i bytet.
- Lämna en förteckning över viktiga nummer bredvid telefonen, inklusive nödnummer, operatör, nummerupplysning, läkare eller sjukhus, vänner att ringa för råd om, ett problem uppstår, och barnvakter, om tillämpligt.
- Ge gärna några speciella instruktioner för att lämna ditt hus säker. Det kan också vara bra att lämna en extra uppsättning nycklar hos en granne eller vän, om det uppstår en nödsituation.
- Lämna gärna information om sopptömning, närmaste bensinstation / butiker / stormarknad
- Förvara oersättliga smycken och speciella personliga saker, om det finns oro för brott. Det är dock inte nödvändigt eller önskvärt att ta bort alla prydnader och möbler.
- Prepare adequate wardrobe and drawer space for guests to store their clothes and belongings.
- If your guests are bringing their own laptop, be sure to leave them instructions for connecting to the internet through your router, wireless LAN, or modem.
- Leave a notebook by the telephone for recording long-distance phone calls or messages.
- Indicate if any parts of your home are off limits or equipment is not to be used e.g. office rooms or a computer.
- Don't forget to leave the information pack you collected on the table for your guests' use.
- Replace basic foods (coffee, tea, sugar, salt...)
- Clean up so as to return your partner's home to them to the same (or better!) condition as you found it. Obviously standards will differ, but aim high! Be sure to leave the linens as arranged with your exchange partner in advance.
- Leave cash for phone calls and any minor breakage. Be sure to leave a note of any incidents or items replaced or broken.
- If you depart early for any reason, make sure that your exchange partner and their neighbours are notified.
- Follow your partner's home security procedures prior to leaving for the airport. Take care to return the keys to their designated locations.
- A thank you note, and perhaps a small gift as a token of your appreciation is always a welcome homecoming.
